Shoot 10 - Straight Images

Shoot 10 - Contact Sheet

Shoot 10 - Work Diary

I will be conducting this shoot in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA as I will be in this city for a week and feel that there is such a unique culture that would make an excellent photo series. For my shoot in particular, I will be focussing on the different careers that people have in New Orleans as it is so different. By doing this I will be able to take pictures of people in a natural element and so I can ensure that my pictures do not look stiff or posed. I will have to take my images during the day and on a sunny day so that the lighting is correct.

I really liked how these images turned out and feel that I achieved exactly what I
hoped to with my final pictures. I enjoyed working in such a unique environment and was able to take some pictures that I would have only been able to take in this city and so I feel I created something completely different to anything I have done before. The vibrant colours that I was able to photograph alongside the people working in the streets truly portray what the place is like. Although, I should have taken extra time and care in taking the pictures as many turned out blurred and I could not reshoot them.

Camera settings: 1/125, f/6, ISO 100

This was one of my favourite images from the set as it is so unique. Not only do the vibrant greens and pinks pop and stand out against the greyish, dull background but you can clearly see that the woman is a fortune teller due to the crystal ball on the table. This is not something that you would ordinarily see in an everyday situation and so I am glad that I photographed this as it enabled me to capture something completely unique.

This was one image that I did not like as much. I feel that the women at the table are not framed well and just seem almost out of place in the picture. The overall images appears quite dull and toned down as there are not many colours that stand out. I feel that the image as a whole does not have any part that is a focal point and that stands out and so I do not like it.

Progression

If I were to shoot in an outside setting such as this again, I would take my time and make sure that every image I take is perfect as there is no chance to go back and redo it. I will also ensure that I go further out to shoot more people as I took all of my images in one place and so was slightly restricted in what I could shoot. I would do a shoot like this again, but I feel that in order to portray messages and create certain atmospheres in my images, I prefer working in the studio.

Shoot 9 - Straight Images

Shoot 9 - Contact Sheet

Shoot 9 - Work Record

For this shoot I will be exploring the connotations that different colours can hold and representing this through the use of models and the Photoshop technique of duotone. I will shoot images of my models behind a white background as this will make the duotone clearer. The poses will be representations of the colours - for example, a girl looking sad will have a blue filter on top of it. I want my models to look  more natural in these images as in the past I feel they have looked too posed and therefore the images look unnatural.

This was one of my easiest shoots as I did not have to do anything technical or set anything up in order to do it  - it simply involved my models being completely natural in front of the camera. In order to get the spontaneous feel to the images, I took the pictures throughout conversations so that they were their real reactions. I also found it relatively easy to edit the images in Photoshop once I knew how to use duotone. I really enjoyed the end results of the shoot as they look fun, unique and eye-catching.

Camera settings: 1/125, f/4.0, ISO 200

This was my favourite image from the shoot. Fuchsia-pink can connote fun and excitement, and so I felt this matched this image as the girl is laughing and appears to be having fun. I liked this image the most as I felt it was the most fun and this is represent through the colour as it is the brightest image in the set. I like how the different tones in this image are so contrasting and so compliment each other and make everything else stand out.

This was an image that I did not like. As I wanted all of my images to look natural and spontaneous, I did not like this one as it looked too posed when compared to my other images. I also felt that that the tones were not as contrasting and almost blended together, making the overall image look softer. I like this look, but it is not what I was aiming to achieve with this shoot.

Progression

For my next shoot I will be shooting images outside as this is not an area I have worked on yet and would like to explore all of my options before the exam. But, I have learned from this that I should work less with posing my models as I really liked how the images from this shoot looked. I can focus on this with my next shoot as I will be shooting images of people in public so I will try to ensure that everyone is acting natural in the images. I also would like to experiment with more Photoshop techniques and tools as I enjoyed working with duotone and like the effect that it gives an image.
