Shoot 1 - Work Record

For my first shoot, I plan to shoot different body parts of three different models against a white background in the studio. The concept of this shoot is to show how every person is unique and so to create a beauty standard in society is extremely unrealistic and unfair. The white background will help me ensure that no attention is taken away from the models by a bright or distracting background. The use of three models will allow me to have a wider range of pictures and therefore have a higher chance of extremely contrasting pictures. I will later edit these in Photoshop and create multiple imagery so that you can easily compare two images.

During the shoot, I found it quite difficult finding body parts that would show a good contrast. For example, I thought about taking a picture of the models' elbows as this would show bone structure, but found problems with clothing and when looking closely there was not much difference. This was not the case for all pictures though as I had many that showed a great amount of contrast. Overall, I am happy with how this shoot turned out as this was my first shoot and only encountered one minor problem. Also, I believe that the message I was trying to create was portrayed well and that my images came out how I wanted them to.

Camera settings: 1/125, f/4.5, ISO 200

This was my favourite image from the shoot. As this is a close up and not an extreme close up, we can see the entire side of each models face but it is close enough that we can see the details and shapes of every feature. I also like this image as both of the models are holding themselves differently and are in different positions within their own pictures, which I think is a subtle detail but helps this image be the one that best connotes how people are all different.

This was an image that I did not like as much. Whilst I believe that it shows contrast in the way they are holding themselves, the bone structure and the skin tone, I feel that the dark features in the image above attract the most attention. I did not want to create just one focal point in this shoot as I felt that it would overtake the main message and instead wanted the whole image to be a focus point itself. When editing in Photoshop, I took out the top picture once I realised this and used the other female model's hand, which I felt worked much better.

Progression

In my next shoot, I will ensure that I ask my models to wear specific clothing so that I do not encounter the problems I did with clothing this time around. I will also ensure that I have a detailed plan of what I want to shoot instead of having a rough idea as after a few images I was struggling to think of ideas and so was limited with my images when it later came to editing. If I were to redo this specific shoot, I would perhaps find more models as I only used three - two of which were female - and so I had only the one male's images to use in editing. My next shoot will not focus on this theme but instead will be looking at social media and how 'Emojis' have become a part of our language.
