Shoot 4 - Work Record

In this shoot, I plan to take pictures of different girls pulling whatever expressions they wish. I will do this in front of a white background so that nothing is taken away from the main image and message. I will then, in Photoshop, place (with text) their likes and dislikes. This will make the image appear like an advertisement for the girl and is trying to make them seem appealing to a viewer. This will connote objectification of women and the male gaze.

I started the shoot using the white background as I said I would but found that the images did not seem very appealing or eye catching. Once I decided this, I changed to the blue background to add a pop of colour and to also contrast against the stereotype of blue being a 'boys colour'. This made the image seem much more interesting. In Photoshop, I testing the white image with the text and found a further problem that the text did not show up clearly and was difficult to read. The blue was much better for this.

Camera settings: 1/15, f/4.5, ISO 200

I liked this image as the likes of this girl are quite contrasting to how she is dressing. In the image, she is wearing black clothing, thick black eyeliner and a nose ring. However, one of her 'likes' in unicorns. This contrasts against the way she appears as unicorns are stereotypically 'girly' and her appearance suggests this does not match her personality. It connotes how appearance is just a small part of a personality and how you should not judge a book by its cover.

This image is an example of the use of a white background. As I mentioned previously, you can see how the text is not as clear as it is in the first image and is quite difficult to read. Also, when comparing the two image, it is clear how the blue makes the whole image pop and seem much more appealing. Although this is how I originally planned my images to be, I do not like how they came out.

Progression

In my next shoot, I will ensure that I carry out a few test shots with different backgrounds before the shoot as changing my mind during the shoot meant that I had to completely re-set up the lights and background and so was extremely time consuming. If I use text in another shoot, I will test out more fonts and different colours as I used a simple white text and I did not look through all of the fonts. Next shoot, I will be using multiple imagery to shot how different people style themselves.
