For this shoot I plan to take images of my models re-enacting several Emojis - emoticons featured of iPhones - in order to portray how they would look in real life. The message I am going to try and create with this shoot is how Emojis have become a part of the English language and how people now use them in the place of words. I will do this by taking the image in Photoshop and creating a thought bubble with the Emoji being acted out inside. This will imply that people now think in Emojis and not words.
When completing the shoot, the models and I found it difficult to completely and realistically act out the Emojis as it is impossible to do for many using just a facial expression. Due to this, I changed what I had planned to do slightly and instead of acting them out, the models instead interpreted them and posed how they believed someone would if pulling the face of the Emoji. I feel that this worked out better as it allowed the models to be more natural in the images and shows how people actually construe Emojis.
Camera settings: 1/125, f/4.5, ISO 200
This was an image from the shoot that I liked. This Emoji has been and can be used in many different ways and so it allowed me to see how the model would use this Emoji - her facial expression shows that she is happy or excited and so it is clear that this is when she would use these Emojis. I also like this is quite a simple image of a girl smiling at the camera as I feel that the addition of the Emoji brings the image to life and brings a message to an otherwise ordinary picture. This connotes how even a simple gesture of smiling has been replaced with the use of Emojis.
This was an image that I did not like. Whilst I believe that it is just as effective as the first image, I did not like the overall look of the image. I felt that, in this picture, the model is too low down and so there is too much space at the top of the image. I tried to use up this space by placing one of the small bubbles towards the top but I felt that this just made the image look messy overall and so I chose not to use this in my straight images.
Progression
Next time I shoot I will ensure that my camera angles are correct and that both the camera and the model are positioned correctly before I take the images so as to not encounter the problem that I did with the second image. I will also make sure that I have thought my shoot through before carrying it out as I did not do this with this shoot and this resulted in me having to change directions with what I was doing during the shoot which was impractical and time wasting. In my next shoot I am going to focus on the topic of identity.
